Cranberry Apple Chutney with Orange Zest

cranberry apple chutney Cranberry apple chutney served with toasted sliced French baguette.

If you’ve ever wanted to taste a holiday, then perhaps I have the appetizer for you.  My cranberry apple chutney with orange zest brings home the flavors of fall, the aromas of Thanksgiving, and the warmth of Christmas.  It’s quite easy to prepare and you can even make it ahead.  It goes so well with toasted French baguette slices.  I just slice the baguette into thick pieces and drizzled the tops with extra virgin olive oil.  Bake the slices until they are golden brown and crispy.  Just reheat the chutney when you’re ready to serve.  It’s a wonderful appetizer to complement any holiday gathering.

Enjoy!

Here is how I did it!

Cranberry apple chutney

Grab a 3 qt. saucepan and heat your olive oil on medium for 2 minutes.  Add your onions and cook 5 minutes until they are softened and lightly browned.  Stir them frequently so they do not burn.  Turn off your stovetop heat and begin adding your fresh cranberries, dried cranberries, apple, cranberry juice, apple cider vinegar, orange zest, fresh orange juice, sugar, minced garlic, ground cinnamon, ground cumin, and kosher salt.  Turn on your stovetop heat to medium-high.  Cook mixture for 5 minutes while stirring frequently.  The cranberries should begin to pop.  Reduce your heat to medium and cook for an additional 5 minutes.  Stir the mixture occasionally and make sure the apple is cooked though before you finish.

Toasted French baguette

Preheat your oven to 450 degrees

Cut your French baguette into 1″ thick slices.  Place your slices on a half sheet pan lined with parchment paper; drizzle or baste each slice with the extra virgin olive oil.  Bake for 8-10 minutes until the tops are nicely brown and crispy.

Place your cranberry apple chutney in a nice serving bowl and pair it with a similar platter lined with the toasted baguette slices.

Note: you can make your cranberry apple chutney ahead and store covered in your refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
