Blue Velvet Crinkle Cookies are the Perfect Winter Treat

blue velvet crinkle cookiesCelebrate winter with blue velvet crinkle cookies.

Is the cold weather keeping you indoors?  Then why not turn on the oven and let a batch of my blue velvet crinkle cookies warm you both inside and out.  I know, the cool, blue color may remind you of this season’s snowflakes and snowmen.  But don’t let it fool you, once you bite into the warm, gooey, chocolaty deliciousness of these wintertime treats, you’ll hardly notice the blustery cold swirling around outdoors.

I was able to achieve this wintery look by adding some blue food dye into the batter and rolling the dough in powdered sugar before I baked them.  It’s a simple technique that makes a big impact.  So the next time the winter weather has you stuck in the house with nothing to do, try baking some cookies.  My blue velvet crinkle cookies are sure to remove the winter blues.

Enjoy!

Here is how I did it!

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Grab a medium bowl and combine your dry ingredients flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, and kosher salt.  Set aside.

Grab your stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment and add your softened unsalted butter and sugar.  Mix at low speed for 4 minutes to cream the mixture.  Halfway through increase your speed to medium to get the mixture creamy.  Add the egg and vanilla, and combine.  Lower the speed to stir and carefully add your blue food coloring and mix to combine for 30 seconds.  Be careful here food coloring will stain.  Start slowly adding your dry ingredients to incorporate them into your mixture.  Don’t over mix, this will result in dry and crumbling cookies.  Expect this mixture to be thick.

Grab two half sheet pans lined with parchment paper.  Use a tablespoons to scoop out some dough.  Use your hands to roll the dough into a 1″ ball; roll your cookie dough in the powdered sugar and set onto your half sheet pan.  I lightly rolled my cookie dough in the powdered sugar, but feel free to add more for contrast.

Note:  Since you are working with blue dye it helps to use gloves.  I found that blue dye didn’t stain my hands like red dye does, but every brand is different.

Place your cookie dough balls about 1-1/2″ apart.  This will give your blue velvet crinkle cookies room to spread out as they bake.  You should be able to place 11 cookies per half sheet.
